Alloy.com interviews Cassadee

Cassadee Pope could totally be the new Hayley Williams. Just like her Paramore counterpart, this cute 'n' spunky singer has dyed hair and fronts an all-guy power pop band. But don't go pigeonholing Cassadee and her band Hey Monday as ABD (already been done, that is) -- they've got their own rockin' sound. (Besides, there's more than enough room in the scene for two awesome front women, right?) Right now, Cassadee and the guys are on the road with The Academy Is, We The Kings, and Carolina Liar on the Bill & Trav's Bogus Journey Tour. "I am so excited, and I love all the bands that are playing, too, so it's like a treat to see them every night," Cassadee says of her most recent tour. "It's really fun." Is it hard being the only chica with all those dudes? Cassadee spills!

Jerk The Horse Off

Jerk The Horse Off from Elliot James on Vimeo.

Plain and simple, we always talk about Jerking Off Horses. Like when someone says a lame story so at the end you say “oh, and then you jerked off a horse!?” So we thought what better way to get our message out then to do a music accapella al in the street. FTH baby.

Q: How is it on tour for you guys?

Cassadee: Tour is absolutely amazing! we love every minute of it. except for when there are van or trailer problems haha other than that. it's great. playing in a different city every night is sick.

Q: [something about hair maybe? :P]

Cassadee: i straighten it with a chi and use aussie hairspray. i haven't really experimented with anything else haha

Q: What is your favorite song off the cd?

Elliot: Hard to pick just one obviously, but I'm really drawn to "Should've Tried Harder". I really like the way it sets the album up to close with the acoustic and it's got a bunch of interesting hooks and effects in it.

Q: so.... have a fav tour memory from y so srs??

Elliot: Hahaha yeah so far it was the first night we played the House of Blues in Orlando. We met some homeless guys that ended up breaking into the show (more about that in Me Sisky and Travis' tour update) and it was also our first time ever playing a House of Blues so I'll definitely never forget that.

Mike: honestly just hanging out with all of the bands. we had sooo much fun with all of the dudes on that tour!

Q: why not Hey Tuesday? or Wednesday?

Elliot: Good question, because we couldn't get Hey Sunday....

Q: best fast food resteraunt while touring??

Alex: jack in the box by far!!!! we dont have those in south florida!!

Q: What did you guys grow up listening to?

Jersey: We grew up listening to a bunch of different stuff really kind of depending on our families. i for one am a huge bruce springsteen kid. cass was big on michelle branch, elliot was a michael jackson boi, alex loved him some ataris and mike is mr. blink 182 at heart =)

Q: How do you feel being compared to Paramore?

Cassadee:
we don't mind them at all. we like paramore a lot. i do have to admit, it does suck that people say i copy hayley. i do my thing and i love every minute on stage. if i remind you of someone, that's cool! but i do not mimic or copy anyone. :)

Q: cassadee, was the blond part of your hair a different color before? did you bleach it so you could dye it a different color? or did you just want to dye it blonde?

Cassadee:
i just wanted to dye that part blonde haha just kinda felt like it. it was just brown before

Q: do you speak spanish?

Elliot:
I failed Spanish 1 in High School

Q: What is Jersey's real name?

Jersey: i do have a real name other then the state i'm from ;) my name is michael and has been since birth, heh. we figured to avoid confusion a nick name would be smart. everyone kinda just swung with jersey, i agreed!

Q: Does anyone have any weird habits/phobias?

Mike: haha good question. we have a pre show ritual, and before every show we harmonize a certain catch phrase. if you guys would like to know what that catch phrase is, come and hang out at a show ;)

Q: what kind of cars do you guys drive? you rollin in those lambos and hummers being on a major label and all? haha

Elliot: Haha i wish, we all don't really have cars anymore because we're never home. Although Mike has an old firebird and Alex drives a Nisan 350 Z on dubz

Q: Cassadee, rumors are that you and Alex (singer of The Cab) might be a number. Just wondering if this is true?

Cassadee: hahahaha noooo. we're good friends

Q: Confirm Or Deny The Following. You And David Blaise Have A ~thing

Cassadee: deny.

Q: what does it do to your fanbase to be touring with TAI and WTK---and also what does it do for show turnouts that WTK has been getting some radio airplay?

Alex:
the fan base is definitely growing ever since we have been on the road, but since the tai and wtk tour it has rapidly grown, its getting fun. Because wtk is on the radio many more people know the words to their hits. <3

Q: Lyk wut r ur most biggest influnces? Wut dew u listen 2 on a regular basis?

Jersey: we most commonly listen to whatever is on mikey's ipod at the time haha. however to get specific, everything from all of the newer favorites out there like four year strong, holiday parade, a day to remember to the maine to all the older goodies like blink 182, fenix tx, mxpx and so on and so fourth.

Q: What are your favorite bands?

Cassadee: mine are sherwood, the academy is..., we the kings, this providence, four year strong, the rocket summer, fall out boy, gahhh so hard to name them all :)

Q: Any plans to come to southwest Florida? Specifically in the Fort Myers area ;p

Alex: hopefully sometime before the end of the year!

Q: Hey Cassadee :)
How did you get interested in singing in the first place? Is it something you started as a really small kid?

By the way, you are my number one role model!! <3

Cassadee:
aw thanks so much :) i started when i was four years old. has been a dream of mine to sing for a loooong time

Q: are the current economic conditions effecting your band in terms of merch/cd sales at shows (or maybe another way)? Are you all doing anything differently now due on the economic crisis or do you all have the same spending habits on tour?

Elliot: Actually myself and Jersey were just discussing this with Adam and Butcher from Academy earlier tonight. It definitely has an affect on the outcome of shows. We grew up in a time when you could go to huge shows with a great line up for $15 and buy a for $10 or under. Now days with gas prices as high as they are and everything else wrong with the economy we know its hard for kids to show up to one show a month let alone a few. We definitely watch where we're eating, how much snacks we're buying at gas stations. We definitely don't splurge at malls or anything either.

Q: What's the shower/day ratio on a typical tour?

Alex: fortunately we stay in hotels about every night, so we shower every day.

Q: The acoustic set outside Jannus was extremely cool. Were you guys upset that you didn't get to play that show, besides right afterwards?

Cassadee:
we were pretty bummed but the acoustic set was fun. you guys were awesome to play for :)

Q: Do you guys know what you have planned for after the Bogus Journey Tour?

Elliot: Sorry not at this time, but as soon as we know you'll know!

Q: Name what bands would be in your dream tour

Elliot: Queen, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Jay Z, and Bon Jovi

Q: do you like candy corn?

Alex: Only in October.

Q: who would be your ideal tour mate?

Jersey: we honestly have been nothing but blessed to tour with the bands we've toured with, considering been fans of them all for quite some time now. if i could tour with ANYONE i'd have to pull an old school name i'd go with an old school name like blink or even a good old nfg <3

Q: Did any of you guys go through hell in high school physics?

Cassadee:
Did any of you guys go through hell in high school physics?

Q: Why the name change from Blake?

Cassadee: there were a million other blakes out there so we didn't want to deal with lawsuits or anything haha. honestly, blake is a whole different band. different music and different members. not saying blake didn't help us all get here, just sayin :)

Q: i know this is pretty early buuuuuut...any chance of playing Warped Tour next year?

Alex: there is a chance :0

Q: I heard a rumor that jersey is a very passionate lover and has the ability to to toast sandwiches upon contact, is this true?

Jersey: well considering you're from SAYREVILLE NJ ;) i'll tell you one thing and that is that i'm ready to toast a sandwich for you right now. before contact... mhmmmmm xo

Q: Cassadee: Where do you get your clothes??

Cassadee:

Q: who answers most of the myspace comments? you guys are awesome for actually taking the time to do that.

Elliot: We all try to get on their as much as possible and answer. Thanks for noticing, it's definitely not easy but we want to have a really strong and personal relationship with our fans.

Q: What would you guys be doing if you weren't in a band?

Alex:
ucf and panera bread!!!!!

Q: Cassadee, how does it feel to sing a long side William Beckett?

Cassadee: it's the craziest feeling ever. ive loved the academy is.. since almost here. and seeing them play every night, let alone singing with him, is amazing.

Q: What were your dream jobs as little kids??

Elliot:
I wanted to be a rockstar, Jersey wanted a Nija Turtle, Alex wanted to be a pimp, Mike was unclear on what his dreams were, and as for Cass she wanted to do exactly what she's doing now.

Q: Did any of you ever thing you'd be here at this point in your lives?

Elliot: I always dreamed about it for sure, and I worked a lot in other bands to try and make it, but this becoming a reality is something I'm very surprised and thankful to be here doing.

Q: Cassadee, did u write the songs for hold on tight? if u did what were ur inspirations?

Cassadee: i co-wrote them with my guitarist mike. he usually comes to me with the music and i add my lyrics and melodies. i wrote "should've tried harder" and "6 months" alone. my inspirations are just things that have happened to me or to people close to me. being on stage and meaning every word i sing means a lot to me and makes me feel closer to the audience.

Q: to mike and alex: when did you guys start learning to play guitar?

Alex:
i was 10 years old when i got my first acoustic guitar:)

Q: are you guys still playing that "birdman" game on tour??

Cassadee: not this tour yet. haha but we are going to start it. for sure. keep the why so seriousness goin!!

Q: cassadee, is that the real spelling of your name?

Cassadee: yes it is :) my mom was feeling creative i guess haha

Q: so I was wondering who your favorite south florida local band is?

Alex: back to the party!!!

Q: i just wanted to know if you guys were going to anything special for the halloween concert?

Elliot: We are still figuring out the details but you can bet will definitely be doing something extra ordinary!

Q: You've been a band for six months, so fame is coming quickly for you. Have you changed at all since signing with FBR/Decaydance?

Jersey: to start, we really dont feel as if fame has entered our lives what so ever. as quickly as things seem to be moving however is an AMAZING feeling to us. as far as signing with decaydance is concerned we really don't feel we have changed as people what so ever. we just love to be doing what we're doing and see it as a gift to be part of the decaydance family =D

Q: hey cassadee have you gone to the record store to pick up your album yet and if you did, how does it feel knowing your album could be sitting next to green day or hootie and the blowfish?

Cassadee: we haven't been able to yet :( there has not been anything around for us to go to. and we're always rushing to get to the next venue. hopefully tomorrow is the day!! i don't know how I'll react. I'll probably cry. ask the guys....i cried when i saw the video for "homecoming" for the first time haha. whatever...I'm a girl and I'm proud of it!

Q: Favorite kind of soda?

Jersey: vanilla coke with crushed ice all the way ;)
(elliot got me into the whole crushed ice thing)

Q: So The Reason I Keep Asking Is Because Cass Seems Kinda Close With All The Guys Is There Ever Any Chemistry On Tour With You And Anyone?

Cassadee: i mean, there's chemistry. but only because we're all doing what we love together. not that kind of chemistry haha
